Gols, Gols, Gols. Lift. Run. Learn. Work. Apply for new jobs. Lifting is going well, and so is running. I think I’ve got a routine down and I’m doing something active at least an hour or two a day. This past weekend was beautiful and perfect for basketball, and luckily the closest court is a block away, has lights from 6pm on, and a good amount of people show up to play. Zach and I are also trying to get in a local league with our friend Ike on Wednesdays which will be fun. Been doing pretty well at work with this business plan, getting pretty close to completion, aside from marketing statistics and a financial plan. Probably going to try to complete as much as I can by the weekend after I get back from Miami. Things aren’t looking too bright as far as AmeriCorps goes and I don’t think I’ll be working at my current position much longer as it doesn’t look like AmeriCorps is going to cover my loans which they said they’d do. I’ve got a couple pretty good prospects already so we’ll see how it goes.

Leaving for Miami this Friday. Heading down there with Wacker and Brogan, meeting up with Mike, his girlfriend Grace, and her friends. Should be a really good time, trying to stay on budget (Vacation funded by tax return $$, thank you Government) and have a good time.

Stranded snowboarder burns cash to stay alive

How’s this for a horror story? A solo German snowboarder was taking a ski lift down a mountain in the Hochzillertal resort area of the Austrian Alps at 4:00 PM when, while he was at 10 meters above the ground, it was shut down for the day.

Dominik Podolsky, a 22-year-old from Munich, didn’t have a mobile phone, no one could hear him yell and he was facing temperatures of 0°F. “I thought about jumping down but then I’d have probably broken both legs and would have frozen to death,” the brave young man told reporters.

As the hours dragged on and the temperature continued dropping, Podolsky tried to stave off hypothermia by tensing his muscles and keeping his hands in his armpits, but he couldn’t stay warm — and he kept falling asleep. Finally, he thought to burn the contents of his wallet with his cigarette lighter for just a little extra heat. Once the napkins, bills and business cards were gone, he had no choice but to burn cash.

He burned some 100 euros, and when he was down to his very last 20 euro note, a snowcat driver spotted him at last and sent for help. It was 10:30 PM when Podolsky was rescued and taken to the hospital for immediate hypothermia treatment. Spiegel Online reports, “He said he may sue the lift operator for failing to check the lift after shutting it down. But a spokesman for the company said it wasn’t meant for downward trips, and that Podolsky must have ignored warning signs and barriers to get on.”

Frozen was released to theaters February 5th. Nobody heard of the movie. Nobody has seen the movie. Conveniently, after this bust of an opening, exactly 13 days later, a similarly-aged-from-the-movie snowboarder attempts to travel DOWN the mountain on a ski lift. Burns his money to stay warm, yada yada yada. Some snowcat driver randomly see the snowboarder at 10:30PM, rescues him (wait…how?) and takes him to the hospital. Dude brings his wallet and 100Euros up to the mountain, but no cell phone. And he rides the skilift down. DOWN THE MOUNTAIN.

I call shenanigans. Obviously the kid isn’t going to sue it was a setup from the start…

help me get rid of squirrels in the attic (Providence)

I am looking for someone to help me get rid of squirrels. I have a three family house in Providence. The Squirrels have been very consistent in getting into the attic. I have had the trees cut but they are still getting in.

Saw it on Barstool, pretty funny

For those of you who know Frameworks, I’m trying to pull that beast out from the depths of forgotten ventures, and it was actually pretty easy to call up a few past clients and get work just a few days in advance for this weekend. Hoping to market a little bit around Providence (there really is no action on computer gigs on craigslist) and Boston as well. I’ll update on how all this goes in a couple weeks.

Zach and I are also going to take a run at website design for some local businesses. Zach’s girlfriend’s mom owns a painting company in New Hampshire, and they have a website that really needs some help.  Her mom, Heidi, asked Zach to take a look at the website for some pointers, and once we realized how much work it might need we offered to completely remake the site. We also looked at her competitors and all of their sites were pretty awful as well, and their web design companies are charging 300-400$ per project. Pretty unbelievable. So instead of spending 6pm-11pm playing CoD and rolling the dice on Chat Roulette, it would be wise to start up a portfolio and work on some web sites. And so we shall.

Right now chances are looking a little better than a JJ vs AK flip that I’ll be in Miami in March so if anyone else is going to be around there give me a shout. Still trying to ‘suade the stakeholders to switch to Panama “Is this real life?” City but I don’t think it’s going to happen. Anyways, whoever is down for the roadtrip just holla and I’ll fill you in on the details.

Not a bad way to start the game.

Yes, I returned to Vegas, and had, as you could expect, a great time. As opposed to my last trip out this was actually a business trip (my first ever!) where I met people that work in the same capacity I do for AmeriCorps/YouthBuild, as Vistas. The conference really helped all of us see where each other were as far as progress, and also realize how close we were to each other, where our projects could interlap, and how we could help each other out.

I flew in around 5pm on Monday, arriving at the hotel and immediately jumping on a party bus headed to the Ballagio for dinner. Hadn’t had the Bellagio buffet before – and keep in mind I’m a starving Vista – and I must say it was amazing. Shrimp. Shrimp. Shrimp. Steak. Steak. Shrimp. You get the idea. All paid for by work which made it even better, so three plates and a dessert in and I was all set. After that pretty much segregated myself from my co-Vistas and grinded at the $1/2 tables at the Bellagio until 3/4 AM. I think I finished up a buy-in or two, went back to the hotel, tried to get the bag I had checked when I arrived but they didn’t have anyone able to get it for me so I just checked into my room. From what I’m told the rooms at the Tuscany are $35/night, and damn are they big rooms. Unnecessarily large. Two beds, full size couch, whatever you call those one-seater couches (Sofa-chair?).  TV, kitchenette. Nice bathroom. It was only a five minute walk from the strip, so it was very reasonable. I roomed with Eric Greene who had been my roommate at my Pre-Service Orientation in Philly, great guy, part of the band “Metaphor for Everything”. They play around Boston, he plays drums/vocals for the band but also plays guitar, talented.

So wake-up was 8:30 and seminar/conference stuff started around 9pm. Not too bad, I think I actually went pretty well without much sleep the whole week, which is making me realize why I’ve been completely exhausted the last two days. Who would’ve thought? The work day went fine, and as you could expect I separated from the pack once again and went straight to the $1/2 table and stayed there for another 4-5 hours before meeting up with my friend Matt Martarano who lives/works in Vegas. Hung out with him and his friends for a bit and then headed to meet up with some Vistas at Ellis Island for karaoke. Unfortunately I had completely forgotten to eat dinner and had also consumed quite a few beverages while playing cards (dumped some money) so by the time I got to karaoke I had an awful headache and retired pretty early. Weakness and my only regret.

Same thing the next day, did pretty well at the tables…and roulette. 75% win percentage betting red, chyeahhhh. Was definitely in degenerate mode, but having a great time, all smiles. Walked around the strip for a bit with some friends – Myriam, Lucy, and Eric, took a pic with Elvis, watched the water show, ending up at Mandalay Bay for some celebratory drinks and to hang out at the bar/dance floor with some other Vistas.

Most upsetting part of the trip: Leaving the tables at 2:00PM for my flight, getting to the airport, finding out my flight was delayed until 6 or 7pm. I will never make that mistake again. Ended up buying “Shutter Island” and reading it on the plane, finishing it just before I went to bed. Not the best idea. Should be a good movie, my only complaint was that it was a little predictable.
